Matthew Denny, who this year has been good for two of the five longest throws in history, will face off in an interesting duel in the discus ring against reigning Olympic champion Roj\u00e9 Stona, Olympic four-time champion Kristjan \u010ceh and reigning world champion Daniel St\u00e5hl at BAUHAUS-galan on June 15.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Discus is one of the hottest and toughest disciplines in the world of athletics right now. Mykolas Alekna’s previous world record was surpassed three times in 2025 – in the same competition in Oklahoma. Twice by himself and once by Matthew Denny. <\/p>\n\n

Australian Denny has long been just below the very best in the world, but last year he won the first medal of his career when he threw home the Olympic bronze in Paris. This year, the 28-year-old has not only made it over 70 meters for the first time – he has raised his record by almost five meters. <\/p>\n\n

This year he will be competing in his fourth straight BAUHAUS-gala, and is chasing his first victory in the Diamond League competition.<\/p>\n\n

– It is always special to compete in Stockholm. I am in the form of my life, and I really want to give the crowd something to remember. The stadium has so much history, and I have had some fantastic moments there in recent years, says Denny. <\/p>\n\n

On June 15, he will face Jamaican Roj\u00e9 Stona \u2013 who surprisingly took home Olympic gold in Paris in an Olympic record of 70.00. Kristjan \u010ceh, who ended up just outside the podium at the Olympics – and the big crowd favorite Daniel St\u00e5hl, who enters the 2025 season as the reigning world champion, are also on the starting list. <\/p>\n\n

Last year, it was an even competition between Alekna, Denny and St\u00e5hl, which resulted in victory for Alekna ahead of Denny and then St\u00e5hl.<\/p>\n\n

– I am really looking forward to competing in my hometown again. The atmosphere at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium is always electric, and it’s my absolute favorite place to compete, says Daniel St\u00e5hl, talking about the preparation for the season: <\/p>\n\n

– Training has gone fantastically well. It’s a new year, I feel strong and the discus is really flying. Staffan J\u00f6nsson (the coach) and I have mostly focused on continuity and I think we have found a training rhythm that works well for me, he says. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
