An explosive start propelled Thelma Davies to victory in the women’s 200m. She ran a brilliant bend to establish a near five metre lead, and she maintained her form to the finish to clock a 22.41 (=2.2m/s). Spain’s Jaël Bestué was second in 22.69, ahead of former European 100m champion Gina Gina Lückenkemper of Germany, who was third in 22.76.
“My finish could have been stronger, it was a little shaky but it’s to be expected with the travelling to get here and with not having my coach here with me,” said the American victor.
“But I ran strong, so I’ll go back and watch the race to see what I need to re-evaluate. This is my first season on the pro circuit – it’s a big transition from collegiate track but I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’m given.
“My goals for the summer are to stay healthy and consistent, I’ve already qualified for the World Championships in Tokyo so I’m very excited for that of course.”
In the men’s 200m, Cuba’s Reynier Mena dominated the field, sprinting clear to a season’s best 20.05 (+2.0m/s). Liberia’s Olympic finalist Joseph Fahnbulleh was second in 20.32 and USA’s Kyree King was third in 20.49.
