It is already Swedish athletics history, what happened in Valencia yesterday. Side by side with Dominik Lobalu and Vincent Lagat, Andreas Almgren met the finish line in what is called the world's fastest 10K race. With few meters left to the finish line, it was still a dead heat. Then Almgren shifted into the last gear and squeezed past the two merited runners. He beat Dominic Lobalu, who already in 2022 won the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm in the 3000 meters. Last year Lobalu was also ahead of Almgren at the same distance when the Norwegian Nordås won the Diamond League competition in Stockholm.
In what should be impossible for a Swedish athlete, Andreas Almgren crossed the finish line in 26.53. Not only is it the best time ever by a European on the 10K road, it's also the first time someone from the continent has run below the dream limit of 27 minutes on the distance. The last 5K went in an improbable 13.09.
The year 2025 has begun in a fairytale way for the 30-year-old Stockholmer. He has already made it back and is preparing for the summer at a high-altitude camp in Sierra Nevada. A summer season that will start at the BAUHAUS-galan and culminate with the World Championships in Tokyo in September.
"I'm really excited to run there. Last year I was quite slow behind Bislett but this year I'm aiming for a maximum and top effort at BAUHAUS-galan, so I hope that as many people as possible will come and support me," Almgren says to the organizer of the Stockholm Diamond League meeting.
Last year he got the entire Stadium to stand up when he ran for victory in the 3,000 meters race. Then it was enough for a fourth place and a new Swedish record. This year, the feeling is that only the imagination puts an end to what is possible for Sweden's new world star.
Almgren has said that after the indoor season, he will focus on training to be at his best this summer. On June 15 at Stockholm Stadium, he will start the season, ready to write new history.
