Ceh unleashes huge discus effort
World number one, Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia unleashed a mammoth 69.83m to steal the discus victory by over two meters from home hope, Daniel Ståhl.
The 24-year-old world champion and winner in Doha back in May added to his 2022 win in Stockholm, whilst Sweden’s Ståhl - the Olympic champion was who victorious in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 event - threw 67.57m in second round, his only valid throw.
“The rain did not bother me because I have a really good discus grip, my technique was also almost perfect and I really had the power today to throw over 70m,” insisted Ceh.
“I got 69m twice so it shows a really good consistency. It was a little bit tough but the contact with the discus was really good also in the rain so I cannot complain, it was almost like normal.
“This year, it is like a crazy discus year - five men over 70m and also today, they are here so it was a tough field and everybody did the best they could. I must say I do not feel any pressure.
“I just want to feel good in the circle with a good technique and just enjoy throwing really far. I just need to throw further than them. I knew Daniel was competing on the home soil and he wanted to throw the best he could. But I feel I am in a 70m shape.”
Swift British one-two in women’s 200m
European bronze medalist, Daryll Neita got the better of her more illustrious British counterpart, Dina Asher-Smith, as the duo registered 22.50 and 22.58, respectively for the first and second spot in the 200m.
The 26-year-old Neita was second over 100m in Lausanne over two days prior, whilst 2019 world 200m champion, Asher-Smith took the half-lap honours in Stockholm in 2016, 2019 and 2022.
“I had a fantastic warm-up, it’s a shame with the weather but we had good vibes and the sunshine came out when we started warming up. I am in great shape and it feels great to win my first ever Diamond League,” revealed Neita.
“I have worked so hard with my coach Marco to be in this position. We know that I am a contender for the medals in Budapest. It gives me a lot of confidence to know that I am good in the 200m as well. Gold is what we dream of - to come away from here as number one. My job is done, the coach will be happy. The time doesn't reflect my shape. It’s great preparation for Budapest, the performance today shows me that I can win.”
