The Stockholm Marathon breaks records and the Bauhaus gala is on the verge of being sold out. Athletics lives on in Stockholm and this weekend is expected to be a public celebration when the Diamond League and Stockholm Marathon are decided during the Super Weekend of Athletics.
For the first time, two of Stockholm's biggest sporting events will be decided during the same weekend. Sun and 25 degrees is the forecast for both Saturday and Sunday, when first the Stockholm Marathon will be decided and then the star-studded the BAUHAUS-gala.
- As far as I know, there is no city in the world that has combined such a large and high-profile marathon with the Diamond League on the same weekend. It really shows how broad athletics is and how much it engages, says David Fridell, who is operations manager at the Marathon group.
Interest in the Stockholm Marathon has increased this year and the participation record from 2014 has been broken. On Saturday, over 20,000 people will cross the finish line at Stockholm's stadium. The next day, some of athletics' biggest stars come to the same arena for the BAUHAUS-gala.
- It will be super fun, we have called it "Super Weekend of Athletics", says Fridell and continues:
- The whole thing arose from the fact that we initially ran into a date problem and then we started discussing whether we could do something about it. It felt quite obvious that we should find a collaboration and try to make the whole thing an experience for a larger group.
Among other things, tickets will be raffled for the participants in Sunday's "mini-mara" and everyone who runs the marathon has received special offers for the gala.
- For me, "Super Weekend of Athletics" is also a manifestation that Stockholm is unique in its approach to events of this type. They are two non-profit organizations that work together to do something for the good of sports, says David Fridell.
- It is in collaboration that opportunities arise. One plus one is more than two. It shows both the top and breadth of our know-how as athletics associations in Stockholm. Big kudos to the clubs that are involved and make this possible, above all Hässelby and Spårvägen who are co-organizers of both events, says Jan Kowalski competition manager for the BAUHAUS-gala.
