The rare occurrence of two athletes sharing the victory in an athletics event, last happened at the Olympics in Tokyo where high jumpers Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Essa Barshim managed 2.37. They had the same number of faults up at that height and then never cleared 2.39. After a short reconciliation, both chose not to jump further and thus they were to share the victory. It had been more than 100 years since a split gold occurred at an Olympics.
