The 24-year-old unleashed a spectacular 90.31m throw to break the meeting record in the third round, whilst his rival threw a 89.94m Indian record in the first round - which also broke the previous stadium best.
Peters - the winner in Ostrava and Hengleo already this summer and with an astonishing 93.07m Area record under his belt this season - later explained:
“I am not really in great shape - I have suffered a back injury, it's still getting better but I hope to be back in really good shape soon.
“Getting the 90m throw was really good, I was very much motivated by Neeraj to get a 90m throw because he started the competition with a PB and a NR and that was pretty good for the start.
“The javelin throw community is really good and I am enjoying every competition. We always motivate each other, we want to make sure that everybody is doing ok. We want everybody to perform well. So doing competitions with those guys means a lot to me. The more I compete, the better I become. In Eugene, it will be anybody’s game.”
Ceh triumphes in epic discus battle with Alekna
European under23 champion, Kristjan Ceh of Slovakia launched the discus to a fine 70.02m meeting record mark in the fifth round to overcome long-time leader,
Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania - who registered a 69.81m national record.
Ceh - the winner in Birmingham, Rabat and Rome - had three fouls but his best effort was still enough to beat Alekna, the 19-year-old world and european junior champion.
“It was going great today - good conditions and a great crowd, a full stadium is always perfect.” he said.
“I stayed focused on my technique to get one in and I got two really far attempts so I am glad for it.
“The first throw was really easy then I wanted it too much so I pushed it and missed it, but then it was going great.
“Actually, this is the first time we were competing together with Alekna - the kid is young and talented, I saw for the first time in my life how he throws and I am impressed. At his age, I was throwing 63m so…this is far away.”
