100 days till BAUHAUS-galan

There are just over three months to go till BAUHAUS-galan at Stockholm Olympic Stadium – 16 June is the new, earlier position on the calendar for Stockholm’s Diamond League athletics event.

The competition will be held for the first time before the Swedish midsummer holiday which means we can look forward to a typical Stockholm sunlit evening with athletes from all over the world leading into an especially intensive championship season. Although the event is six weeks earlier than last year, it will still be the eighth of fourteen meetings on the Diamond League schedule – time for the athletes to have reached their best form.
– It will be a real Scandinavian athletics week with Oslo’s Diamond League meeting on Thursday 9 June.  BAUHAUS-galan is a perfect opportunity for athletes to qualify for the European Championships in Amsterdam in mid-July and for the Olympic Games in Rio which will start one month later, says Jan Kowalski, chairman of Stadionklubbarna, who organise the competition.

Packed week of athletics
However, BAUHAUS-galan is much more than the international track and field meeting; that is merely the highlight of a week which offers something for everyone. On Sunday 12 and Monday 13 June the BAUHAUS Kids will take place where young children can try out athletics as well as meet in person some of the Diamond League stars who have already arrived in the city. The Diamond League shot put, ”Big Shot”, will once again take place outside of the Olympic stadium the day before the main competition.

Diamond 1000 is a mass race which the general public can enter to experience running on the Olympic Stadium track the day after the Diamond League meeting. The events will conclude at the weekend with BAUHAUS Youth, the traditional two-day competition for youth and junior athletes.
BAUHAUS Kids Tour is following a successful launch in 2015 when almost three thousand children came to various Stockholm suburbs throughout the summer and tried out the travelling obstacle course.

– We are organising a similar Tour this year and the obstacle course will be appearing in around ten different places around Stockholm leading up to the Diamond League meeting on 16 June. Jan Kowalski confirmed that dates and venues will be announced soon.

First Diamond League meeting on 6 May
The worldwide series of athletics meetings will start in Doha on 6 May and then an intensive period will follow with eight competitions on four continents over six weeks. The first European meeting is in Rome on 2 June and this first part of the Diamond League series will close with BAUHAUS-galan on 16 June.  After that there will be two competitions in July and two after the Olympic Games in August and then the two Diamond League finals in September.

– Athletics at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will take place from 12 to 21 August and that will obviously be the focus of the year. But BAUHAUS-galan at the Stadium on 16 June is an important step on the way there, concluded Jan Kowalski.
