It will be a world class British 800m at BAUHAUS-galan on the Stockholm Olympic Stadium, June 15. The trio of Keely Hodgkinson, Jemma Reekie and Georgia Bell are all ready to go. All eight of the top-ranked runners in the world are on the startlist – which has never happened before in a running event at BAUHAUS-galan.
Keely Hodgkinson, the reigning Olympic champion, made her international breakthrough in Stockholm. In the summer of 2021, at just 19 years old, she made her debut at BAUHAUS-galan and ran 1:57.51 in the 800m – a time that placed her in the history books as one of
Britain’s best 800m runners ever. Since then, her career has been on a roller coaster ride with several World Championship medals, European Championship gold and, not the least, Olympic gold in Paris 2024. Her return to Stockholm will be an emotional reunion with the place where it all took off.
“Stockholm will always be a special place for me to compete in. It was where I first realised that I could really compete with the best in the world, and to come back here as an Olympic champion feels fantastic. I really hope we can give the crowd a fast and entertaining race”, says Hodgkinson.
Jemma Reekie also has a special relationship with Stockholm. She has won BAUHAUS-galan twice – in 2020 and 2024 – and half of her total of four Diamond League victories have come at this particular Stadium. After a tough period with illness and a change of coach ahead of the 2024 season, Reekie found both form and confidence back. She started the year with a silver at the Indoor World Championships in Glasgow and crowned the season with a personal best in the 800 meters with 1.55.61 in London – and is now once again considered one of the absolute best in the world at the distance.
“I enjoy competing in Stockholm, and it is inspiring to go into the competition with two victories from previous year. I had a fantastic season in 2024, and hope to run even faster this year – and hopefully secure another victory at BAUHAUS-galan”, says Reekie.
The British trio is completed by Georgia Bell, the Olympic third in the 1500 meters in 2024.
With three of Britain’s fastest ever 800 meters on the starting line, the stage is set for a classic race at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium.
