DN Galan still amongst the world’s best athletics meets

On Friday 17 August, the Stockholm Stadium Clubs arranged the 46th DN Galan as part of the Samsung Diamond League. The event went smoothly despite organizational challenges in the run-up to the meet with a number of key personnel leaving the organization creating difficult pre-conditions. But the event itself ended up including 11 Olympic gold-medallists and an additional 27 medallists from the London Games. It led to seven new stadium records from five athletes in thee different events. The winners in the three events were all awarded with diamonds for their performances. Photo: Deca Text & Bild

The TV viewership figures were also high. Some 1,655 000 people watched the two and a half hour live broadcast from the Swedish national broadcaster SVT. Three diamond winners compares favourably to last year when just one diamond was given away and never before have so many Olympic medallists been gathered at DN Galan. According to the All-athletics website, this year’s DN Galan is ranked as one of the world’s best athletics meets, making it a superior meet to the same event in 2011.

DN Galan’s points were 85 049 which puts it at seventh place in the world ahead of the Bislett Games in Oslo and Diamond League in New York. Last year DN Galan received 84 897 points. The points system is built upon the five best results in 12 events as well as an additional 12 results.

The athletes were, as usual, very appreciative of the meet and the Stockholm audience. Olympic high-jump champion Anna Chicherova was one of them. "I like DN-Galan. It was nice to come back to an audience that really welcomes you!" says Anna Chicherova.

One thousand youths competed at DN Galan Youth
DN Galan Athletics Week continued with DN Galan Youth in Stockholm’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday and Sunday where over 1,000 youths from across Sweden and over 2,000 race entries. Just like the main athletics meet, there was a parade of athletes to each event, presentation on the big screen and the meet was broadcast live on the Internet. The whole event was packaged with spectacular music and knowledgeable commentators. A number of DN-Galan’s stars also came out to award medals and sign autographs. Amongst the stars were the 2008 Olympic high-jump champion Tia Hellebaut, who also gave the opening speech, and javelin thrower Andreas Thorkildsen.

Lilla DN Galan a success in the heart of Stockholm
DN Galan Athletics Week began on Wednesday 15 August with Lilla DN Galan for children. The sun shone on Norrbro, a bridge between the Royal Palace and the Old Town, which was transformed into an athletics arena. More than one thousand children tested the different events in athletics under the guidance of athletics stars like Sanya Richards-Ross, Brittney Reese and Christian Taylor.

"We’ve had a fantastic week with great weather and with the Olympic theme 1912-2012. I really want to thank everyone who was involved for contributing to this celebration of athletics in Stockholm," says Meeting director Anders Tallgren.

After DN Galan come the Swedish Championships in Athletics
For the Stockholm Stadium Clubs, things don’t calm down as the National Track and Field Championships will also take place at Stockholm’s Olympic Stadium between August 24th and 26th. "We have a record entry to this year’s National Championships with more than 700 race-entries including 4th placed athlete in the Olympic long-jump Michel Tornéus, European 400m champion Moa Hjelmer and Junior World pole-vaule champion Angelica Bengtsson. Previous Olympians such as Stefan Holm, who is making a comeback on the national scene in the high-jump, and Carolina Klüft," says Anders Tallgren.

Welcome to the centenary celebrations of Stockholm’s Olympic Stadium on the 24th to 26th of August!
