Engberg new co-meeting director for BAUHAUS-galan

BAUHAUS-galan, the Stockholm IAAF Diamond League athletics meeting, is six weeks away and one person who is especially looking forward to it is former Swedish sprinter, Johan Engberg, 36, the new co-meeting director. Photo: Deca Text&Bild

Johan was a member of the Swedish team for almost ten years, set two Swedish indoor 200m records and still holds the Swedish junior record with 20.75 – a time which only five senior Swedes have bettered. He has lived in Karlstad since 1997 where he is sports director at athletics club IF Göta. For a number of years he has been meeting director for the EAA meeting, Karlstad GP and will continue in this role. IF Göta is loaning him to BAUHAUS-galan, which means he currently spends one day a week in Stockholm and this time will increase as the meeting draws nearer.

– It feels fantastic to take the step up to an event at the highest level of the sport of athletics! I will be responsible amongst other things for event presentation, contact with TV, timetable, pre-competition and competition officials as well as being an active member of the overall event management.

Goal is to fill the Olympic Stadium
The goal for Sunday 10 June is clear:
– We are going to do everything possible  to stage the best competition for spectators and TV viewers. This includes filling the stands. I love athletics and live events and it will be a special feeling when everything comes together on competition day.
Johan has competed at the Olympic Stadium a number of times and has a particular member from DN Galan 1999.
– Before the Swedish School Championships in 1998 we printed t-shirts with names on and I chose ”Maurice” after my idol Maurice Greene, who held the world record for 100m at that time. At DN Galan, the following year, I happened to wear that t-shirt to warm up in – at the same time as Maurice!

Board member of Euromeetings
As well as his work with IF Göta and BAUHAUS-galan, Johan is chairman of Elitklubbarna, an organisation of the top Swedish clubs, and also a board member of Euromeetings, the organisation for European one-day athletics meetings. Johan will certainly make a considerable contribution to BAUHAUS-galan’s event management.
