Genzebe Dibaba returns
to the home of her World Records

Genzebe Dibaba thrives in the Swedish capital. The IAAF World Athlete of the Year has smashed world records on each of her visits the past three winters. This time the Ethiopian 1500 metre World Champion may also enjoy the Scandinavian summer when she competes at BAUHAUS-galan on 16 June. Photo: Deca Text&Bild

Genzebe Dibaba  had already broken world records at 3000 and 5000 metres indoors at Stockholm’s Globe Arena in 2014 and 2015 when last February she took possession of the mile record that had been standing 26 years. On her return to Stockholm four months later Genzebe could be bringing the outdoor record with her as well since she will contest the mile at Bislett Games in neighbouring Oslo one week ahead of BAUHAUS-galan.

”Stockholm is my second home. I have such a following here, the crowds are all behind me”, stated Genzebe Dibaba who won at four Diamond League Meetings last year on her way to the 1500 metres World Championships title in Beijing. Dibaba broke the 1500 metre World Record in Monaco last summer and will be racing the same distance at BAUHAUS-galan on 16 June.

Stockholm Olympic Stadium has witnessed 83 World Records since its inauguration in 1912. But you have to go back to the 40’s to find the most recent over 1500 metres. The war era’s most prominent middle distance runner Gunder Hägg broke it twice, in 1941 and 1942.
