17-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus became the youngest world champion of all time when he secured gold in the indoor 800 meters at the World Championships last weekend. Now he gets his first opportunity in the Diamond League. The American has been confirmed for BAUHAUS-galan on June 7.
“I’ve watched several races from BAUHAUS-galan online in recent years. The names that have competed there have basically been among the greatest of all time. They truly love athletics in Sweden, and I’m looking forward to experiencing it. It’s a dream come true for me,” says Lutkenhaus.
American Cooper Lutkenhaus shocked the entire athletics world when he ran 1:42.27 at the U.S. Championships last summer. It was an improvement of his own U18 world record by more than three seconds, and it earned him a spot at the World Championships in Tokyo in September.
Just over half a year later, he stands as a historic world champion after his victory at the Indoor World Championships in Toruń, Poland—the youngest ever. Lutkenhaus has been compared to both David Rudisha and Usain Bolt, and is predicted to become one of the biggest names in athletics in the coming years.
It is now confirmed that Lutkenhaus will make his Diamond League debut this summer—in Stockholm, no less. He will compete at BAUHAUS-galan on June 7.
“I’m going to give everything I have at Stockholm Stadium. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” says Lutkenhaus.
