Irene Ekelund, from Värmland in the west part of Sweden, made a dramatic breakthrough this winter when she improved the Swedish senior 200m record by three tenths of a second to 23.15. This summer she further progressed and ran 11.35 to equal Linda Haglund’s 38 year old Swedish junior 100m record. And this is the distance she has chosen to run at Stockholm Stadium on 22 August.
– After focusing on the World Youth Championships this season, I’m looking forward to facing the world’s top sprinters at Sweden’s premier athletics event, DN Galan, an excited Irene said.
Close to Haglund’s 200m record
At the World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, in mid July, Irene finished fifth in the 100m and followed up with gold in the 200m. Her time of 22.92 was just one tenth of a second from Linda Haglund’s 34 year old Swedish senior record. Spectators at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium will have the opportunity to see this immense talent live on 22 August!
As recently at Tuesday evening 23 July, Irene won the 200m at the Swedish Grand Prix meeting in her hometown Karlstad ahead of European 400m champion Moa Hjelmer.
