Hometown hero Ståhl ends five-year Stockholm drought

Three-time world champion Daniel Ståhl ensured there was at least one home winner at the BAUHAUS-galan on Sunday (7 June).

The giant Swede recorded just one valid throw, but his second-round effort of 69.60m proved unbeatable.

It also gave the hometown hero his first victory in Stockholm for five years. In a stacked field, Olympic bronze medallist Matthew Denny finished second with  69.02m, while European champion Kristjan Čeh of Slovenia was third with 67.67m.

“The discus world is crazy right now, with so many good athletes around me, and that gives me a boost,” said former Olympic champion Ståhl.

“It is great to be here in Stockholm, where I was born and grew up. This is the best arena in the world. I have four global titles, so I feel no pressure at all.

“I enjoy trying to do my best and throw as far as possible for Sweden. My focus is on improving and being ready for the European Championships in Birmingham. I will work on my technique. I had five crosses today and that’s not good enough, really.”
