Almgren returns to the track at BAUHAUS-galan – set to race his European Championship-winning distance, the 10 000m

After winning European gold in the 10,000m and world gold in the half marathon, Andreas Almgren has turned his attention towards longer distances and announced that he will skip the entire upcoming indoor season. Now, the date of the Swedish distance star’s return to the track has been confirmed. On June 6, Almgren will race the 10,000m at BAUHAUS-galan at Stockholm Olympic Stadium – the distance over which he became European champion this summer.

Andreas Almgren has enjoyed an exceptional 2026 season. In August, he produced a dominant performance at the European Championships in Birmingham, breaking away from the field to win the 10,000m in a championship record of 27:23.44. His winning margin was an impressive 19 seconds.

Just over a month later, he followed up his European title with gold at the World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen. His winning time of 58:06 also set a new European record.

This autumn, Almgren has shifted his focus to road racing, with his marathon debut in New York awaiting on November 1. He also recently announced that he will skip the entire 2027 indoor season, including the European Indoor Championships in Valencia.

But his move towards longer distances does not mean Almgren is leaving the track behind.

On June 6, he will be back – in front of the home crowd at Stockholm Olympic Stadium. And this time, 25 laps await over the distance at which he is the reigning European champion.

– I’m really looking forward to racing the 10,000m at BAUHAUS-galan! Setting the European record in the 5,000m at Stockholm Olympic Stadium in 2025 was one of the most incredible experiences of my career, and now I’m aiming to top that over twice the distance, says Andreas.

Stockholm Olympic Stadium is a venue where Almgren has already made Swedish athletics history. At BAUHAUS-galan in 2025, he clocked 12:44.27 in the 5,000m, setting a European record in front of the home crowd.

Now he returns to the Stadium as the reigning European and world champion – and this time, the 10,000m will take centre stage.

– It feels fantastic to welcome Andreas back to the Stadium. He has a very special connection with both the venue and the crowd after setting the European 5,000m record here in 2025. Now he returns as the European 10,000m champion. We want to create a race and an atmosphere that give him the opportunity to show just how good he is in front of a Swedish home crowd, says Jan Kowalski, Event Director at BAUHAUS-galan.

BAUHAUS-galan takes place at Stockholm Olympic Stadium on June 6 2027.
