The Wanda Diamond League is heading into its decisive stage. After a spectacular night in Zurich featuring two world records, the season finale now awaits in Brussels on Friday and Saturday, where the Diamond League champions will be crowned.
Weltklasse Zürich delivered athletics at the very highest level – including two new world records within the space of less than 40 minutes.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Alison dos Santos produced one of the performances of the night. The Brazilian stormed around the Letzigrund to win in 45.80, improving Karsten Warholm’s previous world record by 0.14 seconds.
Shortly afterwards, it was time for another world record. Masai Russell clocked 12.09 in the 100m hurdles, lowering Tobi Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12.
World-class performances came across several other events as well. Switzerland’s Audrey Werro won the 800m in 1:53.70 – a Diamond League record, Swiss record and world lead – while Mondo Duplantis won the pole vault with 6.25m.
It all comes down to Brussels
After a long Diamond League season, only the final remains. On Friday 4 September and Saturday 5 September, the world’s best athletes will gather in Brussels.
Across the two nights of finals, Diamond League champions will be crowned in all 32 disciplines, with the coveted Diamond Trophies up for grabs.
From a Swedish perspective, much of the attention will naturally be on Mondo Duplantis. Daniel Ståhl, Vanessa Kamga and Fanny Roos have also qualified for the finals in Brussels.
Andreas Almgren has also qualified for the Diamond League Final but has chosen not to compete. Instead, he is now turning his focus towards the World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen and the New York Marathon later this autumn.
Next stop: Brussels. Two nights of finals – with everything on the line.
