A magical showdown is set for the men’s 3000m steeplechase at BAUHAUS-galan on June 7. Reigning world champion Geordie Beamish, double Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali, and current world record holder Lamecha Girma will all line up in what could become the best international race in the event this year. “Stockholm is an absolutely fantastic city,” says Beamish.
The field will give the chance to the crowd at Stockholm Olympic Stadium to witness a clash between three of the biggest names in steeplechasing.
New Zealander Beamish claimed a sensational world title in Tokyo 2025 after an early fall in the heats — and following a thrilling sprint battle against El Bakkali in the final. Moroccan star El Bakkali has dominated the event for years with two Olympic gold medals and multiple World Championship medals, and is currently ranked world number one. Then there is Ethiopia’s Girma, who holds the world record at 7:52.11.
“Stockholm 2023 was my first-ever Diamond League race in the 3000m steeplechase and became my breakthrough as a steeplechase runner. It’s an absolutely fantastic city and the atmosphere during the competition is incredible, so it will always be a special race for me. I’m more motivated than ever to start the season as reigning world champion, and it would be amazing to secure my first Diamond League victory here,” says Beamish.
The pace has been set for a time under 7:59, which would mean a new stadium record.
Three Swedish athletes will also be on the start line: Leo Magnusson, Vidar Johansson, and Simon Sundström, all of whom are aiming for the European Championships in Birmingham in August.
“This is a huge opportunity and one of the most important competitions of the year for the guys. They are inspired by the very best athletes in the world. It creates the conditions to run fast times and qualify for championships. It’s important for them to measure themselves against the best. A Diamond League competition at Stockholm Olympic Stadium feels like a World Championships or Olympic Games, in a packed stadium with the incredible history the arena has,” says Malin Sundström, coach of Johansson and Sundström.
